The Licentious Woman

I went down a familiar road one day
I went by the door of a woman I once knew.
She was waiting for me, leaning on the doorpost.
She was prepared with a proverb in her mouth.

Long black tresses falling to her waist;
Deep brown eyes that could draw the stoutest heart.
As fine a figure as could be imagined.
And a fiery temper to match.

Why don’t you step in she pleaded.
Why don’t you stay an hour?
We can relive the stories of our youth.
We can talk of old times gone by.

But I set my face resolutely.
I was not going to stay.
I told her I was a changed man.
The world could pass me by.

Your wiles no longer deceive me.
I learned long ago:
My future lies above,
And the cold grave below.

Yes, once your charms may have seduced me;
Once your beauty enthralled.
But the years taught me a lesson,
And my life has given me wisdom.

So take your offer and begone with you.
For my experience has given me tested silver:
Many women make a man sad,
And there is death to be found in her house.

A dark haired siren can steal a man’s heart,
But the gentle hands of a beautiful woman are iron chains.
Once broken they are never repaired;
Once left one does not take them up again.

My path leads upwards;
I leave the grave behind.
My future lies in heaven,
Where my hope is held secure.
